How to Care For Your Skin & Prevent Wrinkles or Aging
Summer is the time to shake off those dry flakes from the cold and let your skin be free and exposed. But here are some tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing all year long. And of course, these techniques will give your skin a healthy edge in the long run to prevent those dreaded wrinkles.
First, spend some time understanding what kind of skin you have. This might seem basic, but is so important to use products that cater to your specific skin needs—dry, sensitive, acne prone, oily, etc. Such products can actually work wonders in their skin realm (they are not just a marketing ploy).
Always remember to wash off makeup, oil and bacteria before bed. No exceptions. To keep skin healthier for longer, cleanse, exfoliate, tone, and apply a serum with anti-aging properties under your moisturizer. No one ever said beautiful and healthy skin was quick and easy to maintain!
However, don’t go overboard on the anti-aging products. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Many anti-aging products have potent active ingredients that increase the cellular metabolism, sometimes to an extreme. In short, this may not work well for a younger complexion, since younger skin is already highly metabolically active. Overuse of stimulating anti-aging products on young skin can therefore increase breakouts. Instead, concentrate on the basics in your youth—washing, moisturizing and sun protection. If you don’t spread too much energy on preventing wrinkles, they are less likely to haunt you as you age.
Spring for frequent facials. Undergoing monthly treatments is best but getting facials at least four times, a year is pretty good, as your skin can be treated with each changing season. Facials deeply clean pores, prevent aging and destroy bacteria that produce acne blemishes.
Use eye cream to prevent the formation of wrinkles in your eye area, typically the first part of the skin to show signs of aging. You might even begin to see lines in your 20s, demanding nourishment and protection by a well formulated cream.
Eat foods rich in antioxidants, which are mostly healthy foods. Look for anything with omega-3 (wild salmon), avocados, nuts/seeds, berries, fruits and leafy green vegetables. This is an easy way to minimize cell damage and fight aging. Foods with ample antioxidants are also just awesomely healthy all around—they are high in fiber, low in saturated fat and a great source of vitamins. Healthy food makes for healthy skin!
You have probably heard this so many times but it can never be said too frequently! Drink plenty of water. Hydrated skin is healthy skin. Of course, water intake needs depend on body weight, activity level, outside temperature and health status, so there is no easy way to determine how much you should be drinking. Water is good for just about everything pertaining to your health, including your skin.
Lather up! Always use sunscreen. Sun protection is absolutely the best way for young people to prevent aging. Pro tip: use sunscreen every single day of the year. And again, use formulas specific to your skin type for best results.
And don’t forget to sleep! The body repairs daily harm and damage during sleep. Complexion will sallow if cell turnover is slowed, inhibiting blood flow to the skin. Need that beauty sleep!
